2012 Olympic Selection Criteria

Allow athletes around world, male & female, and of different size & weight, to participate.

  • Approximately 20kgs in sailor weight separated the top 3 at the 2008 Worlds.
  • Approximately 30cms in sailor height separated the top 3 at the 2008 Worlds.
  • The current minimum and maximum competitive sailor weight in the Moth Class is 50kg and 90kg respectively, due to the ease of highly tuning boats to suit sailor weight.
  • The hydrofoil Moth is therefore extremely suited to smaller sailors (from Asian countries).

Meet IOC objective for women participation.

  • Top female placed 16 out of 99 in 2008 World Championships.
  • The Moth Class has previous had a female open World Champion.

Give best sailors in each country opportunity to participate.

  • The Moth class already has boats in all continents.
  • Easily accessible and transported around the world.
  • An excellent second market currently exists.

Combine traditional and modern to reflect, display and promote.

  • The International Moth has a long standing tradition of being the most modern single hander dinghy in the world.
  • It is frequently displayed and promoted in all kinds of magazines around the world.
